and Eressea isn't actually Valinor itself...appearently its an island right off Valinors coast...it has several cities...and it is inhabited by the elves...
but at the Faring Forth it will be drawn back in to the mortal lands again...signaling that the time of the Eldar is truly at an end.

*shivers* I am surprised that you are asking this Shadow, being the all-knowledgeable-one, when it comes to Tokien......... Yes Balrog's do have wings..if I remember correctly PJ even gave it to the one In Moira, didn't he? *running to read Enciclopedia*
Reply To this Message

Posted by: Shadow Stalker

yes i know...i do believe them to have wings...however there are those who think the lines in the book were merely symbolism...i think...they talk about it on the Arda Encyclopedia.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Jokers_Harley

Yes, it is in the Encyclopedia and it tells of them having wings

Passage from the History of Middle-Eart:

"swiftly they arose, and they passed with WINGED-speed over Hithlum, and they came to Lammoth as a tempest of fire"

guess that settles that, uh?

or not...if you actually read all their arguments for and against you'll see that its wings probably weren't real. If it did have wings, the Balrog itself would be the size of a house at the minimum. He couldn't be this big and possibly fit into the Chamber of Mazarbul which was small. If he did have wings, they were more than likely just illusions made by the shadows that make up the monster. also..if they have wings...why don't they use them. Gandalf casts down his enemy (the balrog) and the balrog falls through the air...and smashes into the ground. Also in the Silmarillion, an elf and a Balrog fight on a mountain top, and both fall...if the balrog had wings...it would have used them to save itself...
and in regards to your post Erika...winged speed is being used metaphorically for something that moves quickly.
and then there's always the argument that the balrogs wings were useless...if it had them.
but of course we'll never know the answer as Tolkien is dead, and he did make mistakes even in his own books. i think the wings were more of shadowy illusions the balrogs could make...
Reply To this Message

Posted by: Jokers_Harley

Yes yes I rad that afterwards (kinda hard doing all this from work you know) and it says that these were probably metaphorically............. although there is an argument that although the Balrog had wings, they had become useless after dwelling the cave for so long!! ......... I couldnt change it because the 1 hour limit had passed........

so I stand corrected Shadow

To appreciate Billy you have to watch the interviews in EE and on bonus features of the theatrical version. He seems to be a great person. He played the role of Pippin very well. Other than Frodo or possibly Aragorn, Pippin is the one most changed through the movie. People who understand this character have a great respect for any actor who can play him. Pippin is a comedic role only in Fellowship of the Ring. In Two Towers and Return of the King, his role becomes more heroic. When Pippin left the Shire he was only 27. According to Hobbits he is not yet an adult. In fact he has the maturity of a 14 or 15 year old human. He is "coming of age". We get to see him grow emotionally (and physically in the EE). Yes, he is just Frodo's little cousin that tags along in FOTR, but in TTT he is the one that gets the Ents to go to Isengard. Without Pippin the Ents would not have gone there and Saruman would have been allowed to go on. With Saruman still functioning, Frodo would have had no chance getting to Mount Doom. The mission probably would have failed. That's the first time you see the maturation of Pippin. When he tells Treebeard to turn around. That is the pivotal moment for the character. He goes from being immature and self focused, to seeing the big picture. He is a hero. And that heroism becomes even more apparent in ROTK. In my opinion the 3 main heroes in ROTK are Sam, Aragorn, and Pippin. The growth and change of Pippin is tremendous. It takes a good actor to do that. And Billy Boyd fans know that he doesn't have a lot of movie experience. All his acting experience is on stage. He made a great transition from stage to screen. Although he played the youngest hobbit, he is actually the oldest actor of the four. It takes a certain level of maturity to fully understand the role of Pippin. It's difficult to play a character that is both a hero and comic relief. Much respect should go to Billy Boyd. I think a lot of women love him, not just for his acting skills, but because he does seem like such a nice person, he is very attractive, and has a beautiful voice (yes, that is his real singing voice in the hall).

Okay, point taken heather. I would try to see him in a different perspective the next time I see any of the LOTR movies.

I think the reason that the actors have such a large following is because they were able to bring these wonderful characters to the screen. They gave them faces and voices. From now on anytime I read LOTR those actors faces will be in my mind. They are all very talented. I like that none of them are really blockbuster actors either. That makes the viewers able to relate to them better.

I know I've already said this many times, but it deserves repeating. Reading the books will give you a whole new respect and understanding for the characters. And when you truly understand the characters, you have an appreication for any actor that can play the character so well, and make it so believable. I think that its impressive that Elijah, Sean A, Billy, Dominic, Viggo, Ian, John, Sean B, and Orlando were able to do these characters justice. Even most die hard Tolkein fans will agree that these actors remained true to their characters. At least as well as they could with the script that they were given.

The Rewards Program is detail under the Forum News and Announcements. It is basically a contest to gain points for good posts and ideas. The winner gets a month of a special access to new features. Check out the thread, it is pretty cool. I just wondered if people were looking at the Rewards Program, or even knew about it.

Good morning to you all.

Reward Points!

This is a great program. Please read the first post, by Marc Flemming.
This is a chance for you to each earn reward points, and also, for you to nominate your fellow members on here to receive points for a post they have done. If they receive reward points for a post, you will get a 'finders fee' of 5 points added to your reward collection.

We want to reward people for the time they spend on here, adding intelligent, well thought out commentary... for clearing up debates that take place throughout INReview.

Once per month, we will take the two top reward point winners, and give them a month as a platinum member. This will basically give you one month with many of the gold member priveledges. At the end of the year, someone will win a Diamond Membership for the entire year, and have a free 'gold membership' account for the next 12 months.

If you have more questions, please let either Sherry, or myself, know, and we will help out the best of our ability.
