Im reading the Silmarillion and am hoping to get hold of Tolkiens other works. I wonder if Shadow Stalker knows? Shaaaaaadoooooooow!

Reply To this Message

uh...the hobbits probably showed up around the same time as men...and do too their abiltiy to sneak around and stuff they probably went unnoticed. thats just a guess as tolkien never says anything about them in the Silmarillion.

well yeah...but not when it comes to hobbits i bet...that was just a guess on my part...i really have no clue when the hobbits showed up.

Reply To this Message

I am not asking when they showed up guys, I am asking who created them. The Valar, Maiar, elves and men were created by Illuvatar, and dwarves by Aule. Who created the hobbits?

5ft or 4ft?

5ft 7in would make him as tall as a man.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: TearUUp

Frodo had that friggin ring for 17 years??? What the Hell??? Before Gandalf came and sent him on his way??? How long did the actual quest take by the way???

Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

just over a year.
You would never have guessed that the gap was 17 years in the film!

Reply To this Message

Posted by: TearUUp

That's what I am saying! Gandalf rides off for what seems like it might be a few weeks to do some research...and it takes him 17 freaking years??? Gee, Gandalf, why not wait until the last possible mission to dispatch a Hobbit!!! And it took them a year??? I could walk around the damn globe if I had shoes that floated on water in less time!!!

Reply To this Message

it took the hobbits one year, one month and 10 days to get from the Shire, back to the Shire!

Reply To this Message

I repeat my above statement!

but it only took them 6 months and 3 days to destroy the ring!

Gandalf had an entire room of records to look though in Gondor. Gondor is also a ways away from the Shire. Pip is right, he was also looking for Gollum.

Reply To this Message

yep...boring though! imagine doing that for 17 years!

The 17 year gap wasn't written into the movie. Merry and Pippin would have been children when Frodo turned 33. When we see the in them in the movie at the party they are the same age as when the quest begins. The only reason Frodo looked the same is because the ring causes it's bearer to age slowly.

If you listen when Pippin and Merry are in Gandalf's trailer Merry's voice is slightly different, more childish, than it is when the quest begins. I think they are made to look more child-like as well, they look smaller than the average Hobbit.
Reply To this Message

Posted by: Heatherhobbit

But Pippin would have been veeeery young. A boy.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

Pippin was 11-12 and Merry was 16-17
i think!

Reply To this Message

Really?
They didn't make it very obvious in the film thought, probably so it wouldn't confuse people who haven't read the book.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

uh huh!
thats what i do when im bored...look up dates and stuff! Sam is 2 years older than Merry who is 6-7 years older than Pippin, who is 21-22 years younger than Frodo!

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

So how old would that make them in our years, if someone aged *looks back to old posts* 28 is the same age as Frodo at the beginning of the Fellowship?

Reply To this Message

Pippin would be nearly 16
Sam would be nearly 21

I really don't understand this Hobbit age thing, is it like dog years but just a smaller number between them (1 human year = 7 dogs years)

Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

sorta....just because they live a bit longer than us.....you times our age by 1.83 and you get our age in 'hobbit years'

So you would divide a Hobbit's age by 1.83 to get it in human years. That means Pippin would've been about 7, Merry about 10 and Sam about 11. Or is my maths failing me?
Reply To this Message

Posted by: peregr!n

when would they have been about that age?

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

At the start of the Fellowship when Pippin was 11-12 and Merry was 16-17, I think

This should help:

FRODO
at the party: 33 in hobbit years
at the party: 18 in human years
start of the quest: 50 in hobbt years
start of the quest: 27 in human years

SAM
at the party: 21 in hobbit years
at the party: 11 in human years
start of the quest: 38 in hobbit years
start of the quest: 21 in human years

MERRY
at the party: 19 in hobbit years
at the party: 10 in human years
start of the quest: 36 in hobbit years
start of the quest: 19 in human years

PIPPIN
at the party: 11 in hobbit years
at the party: 6 in human years
start of the quest: 28 in hobbit years
start of the quest: 15 in human years

that sums what we were talking about up!

In the book, when Galadriel looks at Sam he feels like he ' hadn't got nothin' on' and she was 'askin' him if he would go back to the Shire to a hole with a garden to himself. Then Merry says '"Thats funny. Almost exactly what i felt myself, only, only, well, i dont think i'll say any more" he ended lamely'

hmmm wonder what he didnt want to say

Reply To this Message
