Britney Arranges Annulment Hours After Wedding

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop star Britney Spears (news) made arrangements to annul her Las Vegas marriage to childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander just hours after the two were wed in a chapel there on Saturday, friends and relatives said on Sunday.
George Maloof Jr., owner of the Palms Casino and Hotel, where Spears was staying over the New Year's Eve holiday and weekend, confirmed Spears and Alexander, both 22, were wed around 5 a.m. PST (8 a.m. EST/1300 GMT) on Saturday at a Las Vegas wedding chapel. He declined further comment.
However, a friend of Spears who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Reuters that by late Saturday afternoon, all the annulment papers had been signed by both Spears and Alexander in the presence of an attorney, a notary public, Spears' brother Brian, her manager Larry Rudolph and Maloof.
The annulment papers were expected to be filed when the courts open on Monday morning, the friend said.
Alexander's grandmother, Betty Alexander, also confirmed the marriage and annulment. "Yes, they got married and they are in the process of getting it annulled," she told Reuters by phone from Alexander's hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana.
There were apparently no hard feelings. Shortly after the annulment papers were signed, the couple on Saturday night had dinner at the N9NE Steakhouse at the Palms Casino and Hotel.
On Saturday morning, Spears was escorted down the aisle at the Little White Wedding Chapel in the city known for quickie marriages -- and divorces -- by a Palms Casino Hotel bellman, who doubled as the couple's limousine driver for their impromptu nuptials, Spears' friend said.
BRIDE WORE A BASEBALL CAP
The only people who witnessed the wedding were the chapel's minister, a photographer and the bellman. The wedding ceremony was videotaped, but no video has so far been released.
The bride wore a baseball cap, jeans and a T-shirt for her first marriage. The groom was dressed casually for what was his first marriage as well.
After spending Friday night at a movie in the Palms' theater and in their hotel suite, Spears and Alexander showed up in the hotel's Ghostbar to ask for a driver.
After stopping at two other chapels that were closed, the couple found their way to the Little White Wedding Chapel. They were told they needed a marriage license, so at about 4 a.m. PST (7 a.m. EST/1200 GMT) they drove to the courthouse, Spears' friend said.
A marriage license was indeed filed in Clark County, Nevada, on Jan. 3, for Alexander and Spears. Signed by both, the document says they are both residents of Kentwood, Louisiana, and have never been married before.
The pop princess, a one-time children's television performer turned teen-aged sex symbol who most recently has posed scantily clad on magazine covers and kissed Madonna (news - web sites) on national television while promoting her latest album.
Spears' close friend said the pop diva was publicly seen kissing both Alexander and one of her female dancers while dancing to her new song "Toxic" at the hotel's Rain nightclub on Thursday night. "It made her kiss with Madonna look mild," the friend said.
The pop diva's most high-profile romance previously was with fellow pop idol Justin Timberlake (news), now enjoying a successful solo career after years with the boy band 'N Sync (news - web sites).
Spears shot to superstardom as a teen-ager with her debut album "...Baby One More Time." She released her latest, "In the Zone," in November, storming to No. 1 on the music charts with the aid of a publicity blitz. It was the singer's fourth consecutive No. 1 debut.

The couple -- childhood pals -- shocked the world when it was revealed they had tied the knot in a late night Las Vegas ceremony earlier this month.
Britney quickly decided she'd made a mistake and talked Jason into ending their union, at the panicked advice of her mother and aides -- who feared she may have to forfeit half her fortune.
But it seems the annulment came at a price -- after hours of negotiations with Britney's advisers, Alexander reportedly agreed to dissolve the marriage and was rewarded with the impressive sum.
A source close to the singer says, "Whether there was any money offered is being kept a big secret.
"I know her advisers went mad when she told them and were desperate to get the marriage annulled.

Ben Affleck has thanked Britney Spears for her brief marriage to her childhood pal Jason Alexander, because it's taken the attention off his romance with Jennifer Lopez.
Spears shocked fans earlier this month, when she and Alexander wed in an impromptu Las Vegas ceremony, only to have their union annulled just days later.
And while 22-year-old Spears has become the target of much mockery, she's won the support of Affleck, whose delayed nuptials with J.Lo have been focused on since early last year.
He says, "Britney, yeah, I'm going to send her a check. I can't tell you how pleased I was -- it was finally the big one that's pushed [J. Lo and me] off [the headlines]. Which is really nice -- nice for me.

The singer tells style magazine ALLURE, "I think that really kind of was a desperate cry to my family. I kind of feel it brought my family together, and that was something that needed to happen. I had felt lost for so long and my mom was getting my sister ready for showbusiness, and I'm on the road, just running around in Germany with my head cut off and not knowing what the hell's going on. I didn't need some counsellor. I needed my mom, and I needed my dad."

Britney Spears' ex-husband Jason Alexander has expressed his hurt at the pop beauty's marriage to Kevin Federline.
Alexander, a childhood friend of Spears, walked down the aisle with the sexy singer in an impromptu Las Vegas ceremony in January 2004 -- only for the star to file for an annulment just 55 hours later.
But Alexander admits he was particularly hurt when he learned that Spears had walked down the aisle with Federline in September, just months after his own brief union with her ended.
He tells In Touch Weekly, "People break up and you go on your own way but you don't go, 'I love you, baby, and I can't wait to see you,' and then one day you call and the phone's cut off and then she's dating and married to someone else.
"Why is it so right with him and not me? Everybody thinks it's a joke -- it's been hard.
"Her life went back to normal and mine didn't. It got all messed up. I've thought about her. I loved her and from what she told me, I thought she felt the same way. Then all of a sudden, this person just disappears. It's hard when I see her face on TV.
"I'm bitter and I'm mad, but I don't hold it against her. She's Britney."

But Alexander tells US magazine IN TOUCH he quickly realised how much trouble he had caused after the wedding ceremony when Spears' attorneys turned up at their hotel door.
He recalls, "We were planning our honeymoon, and then two hours later, there were six lawyers in the room saying to me, 'You're messing up her career. She's got a tour coming up. We need to fix this.'"
"So, I signed an annulment. I didn't even know what it was. I thought it was a pre-nup."
Alexander admits he's spent the past 16 months mourning the loss of a life as Britney's husband: "I've thought about her every day since my wedding, and in the few moments when I'm not thinking about her, one of her songs comes on the radio, and I'm thinking about her again. It's tough."
