Born in Berlin, Germany, on December 8, 1976, Monaghan is the younger of two boys. His schoolteacher father and nurse mother spoke English at home and, when Monaghan was 12 years old, moved the family back to their native Manchester. Growing up, Monaghan worked several odd jobs -- as a mail sorter, a stock boy, a sauté chef -- but he always wanted to be an actor. He enrolled at Aquinas College, a Catholic sixth form school in England, where he studied English literature, drama, and geography. By his second year, Monaghan was a regular fixture in school plays. He performed in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, played the Artful Dodger in Dickens' Oliver Twist, and even portrayed American gangster Bugsy Malone. Monaghan soon started acting outside of school and joined the Manchester Youth Theatre. His work with the troupe caught the attention of a talent agent, who sent him to an open casting call for the television show Hetty Wainthrop Investigates, starring veteran actress Patricia Routledge. Monaghan, then only 18, made his television debut as amateur detective Routledge's underage sidekick, Geoffrey Shawcross.

The actor appeared on Hetty Wainthrop Investigates for four seasons, building a fan base and honing his craft. In the next few years, Monaghan made his feature-film debut as a Russian sailor in Hostile Waters with Rutger Hauer and taped the docudrama This Is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper, in which he portrays the boyfriend of a girl attacked by the Ripper. He also recorded his first BBC radio show, "Stockport...So Good They Named It Once," a family sitcom that features Monaghan as a witty, lovelorn 15 year old.

Monaghan was performing in a play in London when casting directors scouted him for The Lord of the Rings. As a child, he had read all three volumes of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy; the books were his father's favorite. After a formal audition for The Lord of the Rings, Monaghan left England to film the WWII miniseries Monsignor Renard (1999) in France, in which he plays a droll layabout whose life dramatically changes during the German occupation. Six months into shooting, Monaghan's agent warned him to be prepared to immediately leave for Los Angeles or New Zealand to meet with Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings' director. The actor packed, but the meeting never occurred: Within days, he was called with an offer to play hobbit Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck, a major character in all three films.

Yay! We were all very fortunately that they chose him.

he's so funny! He was wearing this rock and roll t-shirt at the L.A. premire... and I found out the reason that he always has TREES written on his hand is because he and billy realized that the premires were their canvase to portray whatever they thought was important to the public. They obviously like trees

I like the relationship between Merry and Pippin. Billy and Dom have good chemistry on screen.

Yes, I saw an interview with Dom and Billy, and those two are the best of friends... they get along wonderfully. It's nice to see that these people become a family, from all the time that they worked together and build friendships and stay together. There are some shows, movies, bands, etc... that are together for a long time, yet they can't stand to be around one another.

I just think it is cool that all of the 9 actors got the Tolkien symbol tatooed on themselves. An unusual bonding experience.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Lawless

That's true...

Did you see the interview of the different actors, showing their tats, and Elijah telling where his is?
That was so cute... he was blushing... because his can't be shown!!!

Many of the actors would not say where they had their tatoos. I read the article in TV Guide when FOTR opened.

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Heatherhobbit

I just did some research. Elijah's tattoo is on his stomach, right below his belt

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Shadow Stalker

aha...no wonder he couldn't show it.

I thought origionally they weren't going to show anybody or tell where they were....hmmmm. oh well They are all so cute and funny! I love them all, especially when you get billy, dom, and elijah together... they are just hilarious!

It was all of the cast as they came up on the red carpet. I can't remember what the awards show was though.

Elijah was so cute at the premire! Everyone was smushing to get his autograph and he was like "don't push please!" and "be careful!" It was cute. His body guards were mean though

Dominic is the sexiest of the four. Elijah is the cutest. Billy is the most good looking, and Sean is the one you'd like to take home to Mom.

I'm know I'm late, but I watch Hetty Wainthropp and my friend and I go crazy over it. She's a bigger Dom fan than I am, I like Billy better, but they're both hot. I was looking to rent or buy a season Hetty, but on the internet it looked like there were only a few episodes a season, because it was with Mystery!. Did I get mixed up or are there only four episodes a season?

Hey don't sulk, maybe you can buy series after awhile, they do that if the show is a big enough hit

Reply To this Message

While the series sounds quite good, I don't think it will last long. I mean, how long can they be stuck on a haunted island?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

Yea very true, I'm sure it will be good though. Who else is in the series anyways?

A bunch of unknowns. Almost all men in their 20s and 30s, so we know what the target audience is *smirk*

Reply To this Message

Well I'm sure alot of women will watch the show if Dom is in it, including myself

Yeah, I'll be tuning in. I think it is on Wednesdays so that won't interfere with my Survivor night!

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Heatherhobbit

I was going to ask the same thing about the hairbrush. We really should get back on topic, but I don't think we have to worry about getting in trouble from the moderators. Sherry and Kris don't usually visit the LOTR threads, and Nathan takes a relaxed approach to moderating.

Reply To this Message

Uh huh! NATHAN RULES!!!!!! And I dont think he would visit here anyway! *throws a big party* So we can do this without him knowing!!!!

I just saw it!! LOST! I loved it! And I don't want to spoil anything so I'll write the rest in spoiler font:

Okay, I just realized I don't know how to write it in spoiler font. I'll make it all white and you can highlight it if you want or something.

Geez, can't do white. Okay, I'll just write it tiny in silver and push enter many times:

He sang! Oh god, that was hillarious! And his reaction in the beginning when that chunk of plane landed behind him was soo funny! It was like, "Oh, hey, there's a plane chunk. Okay then." And when he said, "First you scream, then you scream Jack! I'm Charlie!" was great. Oh, I loved it. I hope you all enjoyed the show if you could see it, and I feel sorry for those like Peregr!n who can't watch it. Sorry for that, Pip. There were parts of the show that made me jump. Like when that poor guy got sucked into the plane. Or when the blood splattered on the front of the plane from the pilot. Oh, and when Charlie grabbed the dead man's leg. *shiver*

What did everyone else think of the episode? It has been added to my Dom Tape

Okay, when I PMed I forgot this odd bit in the show. I can't remember where it is, but at one point Kate looks over at this bald guy and the bald guy is staring at her. He slowly smiles, and has an orange in his mouth. All you can see is orange. He lessens his smile, looks away, and starts chewing on the orange. Weird, huh?
