You can search far and wide, you can drink the whole town dry,
but you never will find a beer so brown, oh you never will find a beer so brown as the one we drink in old town.
You can kiss your fancy ales, (you can drink them by the flaggen????? ) but the only brew for the brave and true, comes from the Green Dragon.

anyone know that line I'm not sure of?

YAY! I have found people who love Merry and Pippin's singing as much as me! ::jumps up and down like an insane dancing hobbit:: I've been looking for those Green Dragon lyrics for ages! Hey Ho is practically my anthem. You should have seen me and my friends after we saw RotK, we were skipping around outside the theater singing it at the top of our lungs! Oh how the people stared...Twas wonderful! And my favorite song of all time is The Steward of Gondor...ahh, Billy Boyd has such a magnificent voice....

yeah me and my friends went to see rotk opening day(in costumes of course) and the cursed power went out! Not once but 4 times! Then they decided we would have to evacuate the theater for our safety, so me and my friends went outside in the mall and started dancing and singing all the hobbit songs. Then we decided to do that in abercrombie in and scared all the preps. lol we had to wait for the 7:00 showing the first one was at 3- which ment we were there @1 sumthing. So we were at the movies for about 10 hours that day. The best 10 hours of my life :-)

After being on this thread I decided to really pay attention during that part of the movie so that I could hear the words. Unfortunately, when that part came I was too busy giggling at them dancing that I didn't cathc the words. Oh well, I guess that's why I'll have to go see it again.

That song is on the soundtrack --- Track 5 --The Steward of Gondaor. And it starts 2 mins and 33 seconds through the track! just so you know!
Me and my friends went to see ROTK in costume and they wouldnt let us in at first (because of the costume...they dont allow it! ) but then i said that this is how we usually dress so they had to let us in! Yay!
The words to the song they sing in Edoras are:
You can search far and wide
You can drink the whole town dry
But you'll never find a beer so brown (never find a beer so brown)
No you'll never find a beer so brown
As the one we drink in our home town
You can brew your fancy ales
And drink them by the flagon
But if there ever was a brew for the brave and the true
It comes from the Green Dragon!

I love that song! and Hey ho! and Pippin's song in Minas Tirith!

I went to see the film for the first time yesterday, so all the die hards had already seen it, so no costumes for me. But there is a medieval fair in my town every summer. People come from all over. You'll find a lot of fantasy and Lord of the Rings nuts there. Me included. I want a Galadriel costume. Or a hobbit costume.

I loooove Pippen's song, it's sooo nice, and just touches your heart doesn't it? And how it shows flashes of Boromir and them fighting and then that stupid dumass steward just eating like he doesn't give a care in the world, that part always gets me crying. Anyways, I'm getting off topic. But i wanna download that song, my downloading program, 'imEsh' can't find the it, and so does anyone here know how I can get the song without downloading other programs?
Please tell me if you know, and thx!

I don't know how to do that quote thing yet but akari seni said this in post #53 "And how it shows flashes of Boromir and them fighting and then that stupid dumass steward just eating like he doesn't give a care in the world,"
I think he is sort of haunted about what he just did to his son and his men when Pippin starts singing.... I don't know maybe it's just me... anyone else see any nervousness in his eyes?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: MistyRainWater6

Yea your right, he does seem kind of nervous, never noticed that before.....

Reply To this Message

I don't necessarily think it was regret though... maybe just a feeling that people (like pippin for example) think he is a terrible father... I LOVE the way pip say.. but we have no songs for great halls and .... evil.. times and emphysizes the word evil as he looks at denethor with disgust

Reply To this Message

Posted by: billyisthebest

okay here's Aragorn's song...
"Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien. Sinome
Maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn’
Ambar-metta!"

in english...
"out of the great sea to Middle-
earth I am come. In this place will
I abide, and my heirs, unto the
ending of the world."

Pippin was nervous because he was realizing how aweful the steward was.

Reply To this Message

no not Pippin being nervous... Denethor was nervous.

Reply To this Message

LOL, yeah, but I still think the steward, Denethor is a dumbass Ok, I know this is getting off topic, but let me know if you agree with me. You know that so called Orc, the peach coloured one, I dunno, but don't you guys think that they shouldn't have added him in the movie? Cuz don't you think he sort of takes away the essence of the movie, and make it look kind of Star Trek-ish? I don't know, maybe it's just me...

For the "Green Dragon Ale" song, I thought that it went like this:

You can kiss your fancy ales, you can drink them by the flagon but the only brew for the brave and true, comes from the Green Dragon.

Reply To this Message

Kiss doesnt make sense really... i would say it was keep, if you put it with the lyrics.

You can search far and wide
You can drink the whole town dry
But you never will find a beer so brown
No you never will find a beer so brown (as the one we drink in our home town)
Well you never will find a beer so brown,
As the one we drink in our home town!
You can keep your fancy ales
You can drink them by the flagon
But the only brew for the brave and the truuuuuuue
comes from the Green Dragon!
-----------
Home is behind, the wrld ahead
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadow, to the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight
Mist and Shadow, cloud and shade
All shall fade, all shall fade.
-----------
Hey ho! To the bottle I go!

Sweet is the sound of the pouring rain
And the stream that falls from hill to plain
Better that rain or a rippling brook

That's Awsome!!!! and I am pretty sure it is kiss... because it's like they are saying that they aren't nearly as good at the green dragon, so they can just kiss their fancy ales because they don't want them

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

I think they both fit the wording in the right context:

If you think of kiss as you can kiss them goodbye, then it works... But then keep also works, if you think about people offering it to Pip and Merry, they might say, 'Nah, keep them, the only brew for the brave and the truuuuuuue comes from the Green Dragon!'

Funny.... wherever I looked, the lyrics say KICK your fancy ales...

By the way: These songs do great in taverns on Live Action Roleplaying Events here in Holland!... We even raised some money (in game though) with it! And don't get jealous, people... but we have our own Billy Boyd lookalike playing a hobbit in our party... and guess what: He sings just like him... flawless.

Correction: It's cloud and shade, but that could be just a typo. After that it's

Hope shall fail,
All shall fade.

Nothing is repeated in the song.

Just a thought...
Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sandy_Murray

It is repeated twice I'm afraid. airaeresse's version is correct, apart from the typo correction you made.

Do you think that song is meant to be as sombre in the book, or has the tune been adapted as well as the lyrics?

Welcome to INReview, by the way jwoolygirl

Yeah, it is repeated, Me and my friend had this huge argument over it. I said it was repeated, she said it wasn't. We looked up the lyrics and put the movie on subtitles. It's repeated.

I'm not sure but I think someone was wondering about the whole song in the book. Here it is:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still around the corner we may meet
A sudden standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.

Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!

Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still around the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run,
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn and nut and sloe
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.

Then world behind and home ahead,
We'll wander back to home and bed.

Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And to bed! And then to bed!

~Pippin

Funny.... wherever I looked, the lyrics say KICK your fancy ales...

By the way: These songs do great in taverns on Live Action Roleplaying Events here in Holland!... We even raised some money (in game though) with it! And don't get jealous, people... but we have our own Billy Boyd lookalike playing a hobbit in our party... and guess what: He sings just like him... flawless.
Can one imagine a WHOLE tavern full of costume wearing loudmouths becoming quiet because Marcus (his real name) started singing?!... The guy is simply

By the way HULLO!!!!!! Sorry for meddling in your business but hey, I am just a little snoop..... and a meddling one too...

MAN, I am from Holland too, and could you please tell me WHERE they sing that song, cuzz then I will go to it, even if I have to take a plane!

Ok! My friend just brought round her pirate copy of LOTR and i recorded that song onto my computer. I have listened to it about 10 times and the word is keep!

Woow, thats cool! Do you know any way to get it on my puter too? I want to listen that songs hundreds of times. And I hear of people which were singing that song on the streets with there friends, and I think that's AWESOME!! I wish I had some friends which were like that! Unfortunately, I know just one real LOTR fan, and I ain't sure if he will sing this where everybody can see it!
