| Posted by: snunka | | Now that the whole story is wrapped up, who is the main character?
I think Sam is the most important character in the whole story. Yes Frodo did carry the ring and it was a burden. But ultimatly it was Sam who got frodo through and he also is the all round best character in the whole story. If you compared any character to Sam; He is more Trustworthy, Pure, Honest, Loyal, Innocent, and Determined character out of any. I just think the story is indirectly about him rather then Frodo. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Heatherhobbit | | Yes, but if you include Sam, you have to include Merry and Pippin too. Especially Merry. In the movie you don't really get to see how important they are, but in the book you do. In the book, at least Fellowship of the Ring, Merry is even more important than Sam. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Shadow Stalker | | i agree. i don't think there was 1 main character. granted, there were some characters who were more important than others, but there wasn't really any one character that took center stage. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Larke2000 | | i know the fellowship, as a whole, saved middle-earth. but at the most basic level, i feel the story is about the hobbits - what they learn and how they grow (thus we learn and grow with them) -as they go "there and back again". | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: snunka | | Well put Larke. That's what i fell as well. But when you break down the hobbits i would say that the story really is Sams.
Plus, If you read the book it all ends with the hobbits back in the shire. And that is when we see how much the adventure has changed the hobbits. And how they grew as individuals and as a group of friends. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Larke2000 | | snunka, as far as the movies go i would agree with you that sam is the main character of the story. i wrote my answer thinking about the books. but now that i think about it, i suppose a good argument could be made that sam - who, in my opinion, remained the least changed of all the characters - is also the main character in the book as well if we "break down the hobbits" as you suggest. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: snunka | | Ya, your right.
Merry and pippin Grow a foot taller and become very good warriors.
Frodo is the ring bearer and that really messes him up and changes him completly.
Sam remains good at heart from begging to end with the minor differences, like seeing oliphants, and taking out 4 orcs solo. But in the end; even after carrying the ring, he doesn't change. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Shadow Stalker | | uh...i don't think that merry and pippin grow a foot taller. they get taller but not by that much. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Nightfall | | actually, they do say that Merry and Pippin grow just a few inches, which is still quite amazing at the age of what, 30? | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: White Tiger | | The question isn't who is the story about? it is what is the story about?
It is about trial and adversary, heroism, bravery in the face of defeat, the small things that we do that can be interpreted as heroic and of course the story that anybody, nomatter how small, can be a hero. | | Reply To this Message
