| Diana, Princess of Wales was pregnant at the time of her death, it has been alleged.
A senior French police source told the Independent on Sunday newspaper that there was a "cover up of sorts" following the car accident in Paris in 1997 in which Diana received fatal injuries.
He told the paper: "I can tell you that she was pregnant."
The source, who claims to have seen all the relevant documents, said the pregnancy was not mentioned in the official investigation into the crash by a French judge because it was not considered relevant to either the causes of the accident or Diana's death.
The claim that Diana was pregnant with Dodi Fayed's baby has been most prominently voiced by Dodi's father, Mohamed al Fayed.
It has been consistently denied by people close to the late Princess since it first surfaced following her death.
A spokeswoman for the Prince of Wales has said it was not a matter Clarence House would comment on.
Earlier this month, royal coroner Michael Burgess announced he will be opening an inquest into Diana's death in the New Year.
The French inquiry ruled out foul play as a cause of the crash in the Alma Tunnel.
Instead the judge, Herve Stephan, placed most of the blame on the driver of the Mercedes, Henri Paul, who was drunk and on anti-depressants at the time.
Thousands of documents compiled during the French investigation are being sent across the Channel for Mr Burgess's inquiry.
