Why is it when you tell people that you love Lord of the Rings and have read the book multiple times, they say that you are a geek? It amazes me that people do not want to read it because they associate this truly brilliant work with being a geek thing.

heck..over the past 3 years i've read the book...oh...4 or 5 times...but thats nothing compared to Christopher Lee. He's read the books once a year for the past 5 decades. if we're geeks then he's an ultra geek or something...

I was just floored today when my sister-in-law said she had never even watched the movies because they are geek material. Wow. I was so shocked and ashamed to be related to someone who has not watched the movies. Not everyone is into reading, but not seeing LOTR.

Nope. I just wondered what all the other fans of Tolkien thought.

Well, I have never even tried to learn elvish, so I guess I am safe.

I dunno... people who I know that don't like LotR mostly don't like it cos it's "fantasy". And they wanna, you know, 'keep it real'. *rolls eyes*. What's bad with bits of magic and fantasy? But I agree stuff like learning elvish are too much, although to really get to the story you gotta be a bit crazy. Live in a world of your own. Things like that.

If liking lord of the rings or matrix classifies me as a geek, well. Good, im glad to be a geek.

I am a very proud LOTR geek! I have read the books so many times I lost count and I have memorized almost every line in The Fellowship of the Ring movie. I am close to memorizing Two Towers. I didn't try to memorize them, it just happened because I have seen them sooooo many times. Now I have to go see Return of the King in the movies several times. Then I will buy the DVD when it comes out and memorize that movie too. I still haven't bought the extended versions of the first two. When I do that, my life will be complete...just joking about the last part.

You should see the extended version. It almost makes the theactrical versions seem, crappy.

I used LOTR (besides "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Christo") to teach myself French, by reading the French version. Of course, I already knew the English one from two readings (and the other books from reading the German translation).

I'm getting at the Italian version now, to polish up my knowledge of that language.

Maybe. But I also read Balzac in the original French by now, not to mention I have read George Eliot's "Daniel Deronda" three times (and it is not the only book I've read several times).

I suppose that just makes me an avid reader.

I dont get anything of LotR for x-mas nobody else likes it where i am. have to buy the things myself with very LITTLE money.

wow, everybody near me loves it...in fact we all get each other the same things and end up returning half of it for more lotr merchandise...i guess i'm just....blessed

I sure as hell ain't no geek! I may work with computers and like all this LOTR and such...but noone I know would call ME a geek! Unless they want to see this "geek" "hulk" out!

being a geek/nerd is a matter of perception, and so what anyway!?!?!? People who wish to call us names cause we understand and appreciate the work of a genius are just shallow, imature, UNcultured, and arrogantly ignorant.

I've never read any of the books but I have now seen all three movies in the LOTR series. I went to the theater the night after Christmas to see "Return of the King" and when the movie, as long as it was, was over, it saddened me to think that that was the last one. And I don't usually go for movies that largely take place on a battle field.

Since I was the one who started the thread, I will pipe in again. I was just amazed that there are people out there who will not see the movie because they are worried that it is not "cool" enough for them. Most of them I doubt can read.

I went down tp the premire in L.A. and it was the coolest thing ever! they were all so sweet! I got to meet them all and got autographs and stuff. It was amazing

Start reading the fellowship of the Ring. It won't put you to sleep. And it gives you enough background information, that you don't have to read The Hobbit. In all honesty, I didn't like the first 3 chapters of The Hobbit either. But you have to remember that it originally started out as a children's story.

You mean the books? They are easy to find. They are at any book store. Even places like Walmart and Target sell them. You can get them on Amazon.com if you don't feel like going to the store. That's how I got mine. My set from Amazon.com came with all three books from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Barnes and Noble has a Lord of the Rings Section. It's right next to the Fantasy section. It has alllll the Tolkein books. Hardback, paperback, compilations, etc.

My father is real big on LOTR. I thought that he was going to wear out the DVD after we got "The Two Towers" and the same with "The Fellowship Of The Ring"...He watched them that much. And this was an everyday thing. I wouldn't be surprised if he had them both committed to memory now...

What does he like most about the movies?

I really don't know. But when we went to the theater to see "The Return of The King" he gave my mother a history lesson all the way home. I think he likes the fact that they are fantasy.

It takes us away from our world, where little people do not make a difference, even if only for 3 hours.

That's what * I * like about it And when you get Legolas and Gimley together...that's just funny

Legolas and Gimli are funny together. Book readers get this even more because if you read the book, you'll see why they are so competitive. Dwarfs and Elfs, while not exactly enemies, are not friends. Legolas and Gimli are an unlikely pair.

i love the part in TTT when you hear gimli roaring out "21, 22, 23..." an your like...wow..he's a killing machine!

That part was cool...he looks at Legolas and says; "Legolas...that's two!" and Legolas was on like seventeen! Elves kickass! I'm still not a geek!

I liked the part in "Return Of The King" where Legolas killed everyone that was riding on top of the elephant and then killed the elephant and Gimli shouted, "That still only counts as one!" It was funny, the whole theater laughed

Hey I have read the books once a year since 1987, does this make me a geek?? I think JRR was a master at his craft and although I don't go as far as some of my friends who are wrtiting in the Old Tongue, I have grown up loving these books and will continue to do so! So are we geeks? Ummmmmm I don't think so.................... but what the hell do I know?

I wasn't saying that I am like that. I'm not, believe me. My family is actually quite religious. I'm not a religious freak either though. I'm not one to go around "throwing the bible" at people and telling them that if they don't read it and commit it to memory they're all going to die and go to hell.

I still have to take Accounting. I actually took it last quarter but I made a "D" so I have to retake it. I really hate that class.

Yeah I hated that calss too Pulse but not as much as Economics or Statistics............... those were HORRIBLE!!!

I think I'd rather take Networking again. And that class was boring.

Statistics and Calculus. Yuck. I got a B in both classes, but couldn't even begin to explain any of it to anyone. I should have gotten an F. I had the same professor for both classes and he was a hippy that didn't give tests. All you had to do was turn in assignments. I copied from the guy behind me. That's how I passes. I have no idea what a derivative, or whatever is. I made grocery lists and balanced my checkbook in class instead of taking notes.

Economics was okay. We had a business.

I wish my Accoutning instructor didn't believe in tests.

Heather why couldnt that have been my professors???? I had to actually conduct a research for my statistics class that almost sent me to the nut house...........worst of all was that he partnered us off and I got a stupid jock (no offense meant) so guess who did all the work???

I liked Accounting. It just seemed like common sense to me.

Accounting was simple , the beginning courses anyhow, the stuff that follows is what is hard. I even enjoyed the law classes that I needed to take, those were fun

It was required for my degree to take Statistics. Guess what! Been in Social Services for about 6 years now. Never used it.

Someone told me once that they had the perfect job. I asked them what they did and they said that they were a body piercer. They said that everyday they have to sit through their customers asking them all kinds of stupid questions and then they get to hurt them. I agreed with them about their job being perfect
