My favorite comic series is the X-Men. I like Spiderman and the Hulk and some of the Avengers. I also liked X-Factor and The New Mutants, as well as Generation-X. Also liked X-Calibur.
Marvel used to publish special books that were about the origins and history of the characters in the Marvel Universe. In fact, I think those comics were actually called Marvel Universe. They were set up alphabetically, and included characters like the Wasp, She-Hulk, Doc Samson, Iron Fist, etc... I got to learn a lot about characters that I'd never seen in comics before. I learned from Marvel Universe, that Kingpin can lift about 800 lbs. He's not so much fat as he is dense (physically). I learned that Rogue can lift approximately 40 tons (using the strength she stole from Ms. Marvel, or Carol Danvers...) I learned about Wolverine, The Watcher, The Abomination, Rocket Raccoon...
I don't know if they still issue comic specials like Marvel Universe, but I remember loving those issues as a child...
Yeah, those were pretty sweet, because they told you origins, powers, and if they were active, affiliated or deceased! Pretty informative. I think that the X-Men were always my favorite, but I really like Image comics and CrossGen! The art and story lines are kicka$s! McFarlan art is the best, (Spawn) and he's even done some art on Spider-Man and a couple of other Marvel comics.
I haven't really gotten into Spawn, for some reason... Maybe it has to do with part of my initial impression of the comic being formed by the crappy movie... The movie did incorporate some cool CGI effects (like Spawn's cape), but I was very dissapointed in the movie. Bad acting, poorly-paced story... Theresa Randall was hot as always, but the lead actor was crap. Why would anyone give him a leading role in anything? He can't act....
That movie did suck!!! Bigtime! I didn't even want to watch the whole thing! But you have to check out the animated version. They actually have a couple of them out, and they have kicka$s art, story-line, and....they are unedited.
Is that part of McFarlane's appeal? The grittiness of Spawn? Is there swearing in Spawn, or did they not push things that far yet?
Maybe I'll go grab an issue tonight or tomorrow...
Oh, and by the way, I did give it a second chance. I watched one of the animated versions. The one that has Spawn's character voiced by the same guy who voiced Goliath in Gargoyles. I enjoyed the animated version. It was worth the time I gave it...
That's my man! HECK, between my brother and I, I think we had 4... We lost ALL of them though... Moving 6 or 7 times in 6 years will do that to you...
I forgot about Iron Man... I never collected DC comics. How have they lasted so long? You'd figure that MARVEL would've bought them out a long time ago... Especially when DC was struggling to survive, and splintered Superman into 4 different characters... Superman was killed by some pathetic beast alien guy... That issue was so terrible... Was it because that beast had shards of kryptonite all over him? So, stand back and sear the bastard with heat vision... Oh well... It's in the past.
I could talk all day about the X-Men and the mutant storylines. I like Cable, and X-Man, but I haven't been able to collect very many of the issues, so I know very little about his life, save that he's Nathan Summers, son of Scott and... Madeline Pryor?? The Goblin Queen?
I cannot stand DC! But that Marvel and DC crossover was pretty cool! Where the characters merged together when the two Universes were merging. Wolverine merged with Batman and looked pretty damn cool!
What's Mr. Sinister's story? Was he some mad scientist from the dark ages, who found a way to lengthen his life through DNA manipulation? Is he like the High Evolutionary, in a way? Both can seem nuts at times, huh?
I don't remember the DC/Marvel crossover... When did that happen? Sometime during Onslaught?
Onslaught's another character I never got to fully understand. He was purely psionic, right? Created from the emotions and psionic energy from both Xavier and Magneto, when Xavier wiped Magneto's mind, but didn't do a good job? I never fully got Onslaught, because the storyline arced through so many different series... Part of the story was in X-Men, other parts were in other comics like X-Calibur, etc... I never got the full picture...
Apocalypse... Now there's a guy I need to read up on. I only know that he was the first mutant, born in ancient egypt... I still don't know what his powers are, or why he does what he does...
Oh, Apocalypse, damn, what was the name of the comic....I have the series, but all my comics are buried! But his real name was En Sabah Nuhr and he had like superhuman strength, longevity, and such at first. Then, he gained his megamorphic abilities, teleportation, and more when he entered that freaky space ship and came out with his metallic body. Then Mr. Sinister empowered him even more!
As for Mr. Sinister, he's been around for a very long time too. I have a comic in it where he pretended to be a rich nobleman (a loooong time ago) I think his name was Nathaniel Essex, and when a lady he was in love with discoved that he could change shape...she freaked, then died, he nutted up and the rest is history! I know that he has total control of his body and plasma powers, telepathy, and a few other abilities.
Ghost Rider is lame! Spirit of Vengence finds a host to enact revenge upon the abuse of the innocent! He flares up everytime innocent blood is spilled! Hangs out with Jhonny Blaze
Power Man...hmph! I'm sure it took a lot of thought to come up with that idea? Um, hmmmm...I'm strong...I know....I'll call myself Power Man!!!!! Colossus would whip his a$s!
I bet Batman carries Kryptonite with him in his Utility Belt, encased in lead. Superman better watch out... But Superman has superspeed, so I'm sure that he'd finish Batman off before Batman could even reach into his belt for the kryptonite.
For the answer to that question look to detective comics (i forgot the number) it's the issue where Batman breaks into the white-house to steal the Kryptonite ring from President Luthor's desk . and the president had superman try and stop him (superman being the ultimate boy scout .and batman out maneuvered him every step .(without the use of the dreaded mineral)
I can't stand Batman...as a matter of fact not real big on D.C. at all...but there have been a couple of cool comics from there....especially that D.C./Marvel crossover! All ya have to do to Batman is throw in a pretty lady and he gets all wussified!
Try Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. No pretty ladies there and old Bats is far from a wussy. Hands down the best Batman story there is. Admittedly my Batman knowledge is very limited but still, I highly recommend this.
I also recommend The Dark Knight Returns #1 . this is the issue where Batman reclaims his title after coming back over having his back broken by the (venom powered) Bane
The art is great. Miller's style may not be to everyone's liking, but I think it suits the mood of the story perfectly. I did a quick search and there's not that many pictures of it around, but there's lots of Miller's other stuff to be found on the web to give you an idea of his style.
I've never even heard of that 1602, what is it about? Um...mini series...I'm not too sure on what I would recommend there!!! But the Cross-Gen have compilied a couple of series into a couple of Graphic novels...and The Tenth was a pretty cool comic!
1602 is a what if type of story . whereas current marvel chareters are placed into this time period (hence the name) to see how they are and who they will be . It's a very good story so far ,art is decient ( Andy Kubert) ,and the storyline have plots and twists that you wouldn't expect .
thats what they do becaus they are really jealous about the child like enthuisam and enjoyment people like us get out of life , and wish they could be the same way . (my wife often jokes saying if I need my diper changed I have ta go back to my mother) .
There's a mini-series called Rising Stars that was apparently pretty good. I have a friend who's really into art of all forms, but he REALLY likes comic art. He loved the storyline in Rising Stars, as well as the art. He recommended it to me, but I haven't had the chance to hunt the comics down. J. Michael Straczynski is behind the comics, which were published by Top Cow I believe... Check them out if you get the chance... It has something to do with a strange meteor touching down in a quiet town sometime in the 1960's. The energy from the meteor is forced outward at the time of impact, and the wave passes through the people in town, affecting only the children developing in their mothers' wombs. Those children develop unique abilities, and the series looks at how they and the people of their town deal with these special children. The story follows their lives from birth to death, but focuses on only a handful of the approximately 130 kids with abilities. I hope to get my hands on the series sometime soon...
I don't know if you ever saw it but about twenty years ago there used to be a t.v. show called the misfits (based off a comic) that was about a handful of teenagers with unusual abilities!
Oh yea !!! Rising Stars is an excellent series to get into I have every issue . Each 1 is packed with all the things that makes a comic book great . and i'm not the only 1 to think so since they are making a movie out of it .(coming out in Dec, 2005)
I have a couple of episodes of it on tape . It was called Misfits of Science on NBC Friday nights at around 8:00 CST .tell me who remembers a show called auto-man and 1 of the stars in it were Dezie Arnez Jr? while we are at it who could remember some superhero saturday morning cartoons?
OMG YOU STILL HAVE EPISODES??? WOW!!! Never heard of Auto-Man, but I use to watch The Fantastic Four and the Spider-Man cartoon with Firestar and Iceman!
I remember Automan... I was REALLY young when I watched the series, but I definitely remember the line, "Cursor!" I had a bout of nostalgia about 2 years ago, and I hunted down information on the show... It took me a little while, because I couldn't remember the name of the show, or any specific characters. All I had to go on was Cursor, and a few dying memories of the look of the show (like the cool car that zig-zagged in traffic, turning at right angles!). Was Automan based on a comicbook?
I'm excited about Rising Stars becoming a movie! Still, we know that Hollywood doesn't stay true to all aspects of comic storylines, so I'd better hurry up and get acquainted with the series through the real comics...
I never watched saturday morning cartoons as a kid growing up due to religious observances in my home, but I still know a lot of them. Rambo, Centurions, M.A.S.K., Inhumanoids... A lot of them were shown on the sunday of the following weekend, so I got to see the reruns of some of them...
Interesting thing with a number of those shows, is that they were either brought to television FROM comics, or they were converted INTO comic series when they became popular...
And don't forget about long lost shows like OrrBots..... Galaxy Rangers ...... G.I.Joe ....... Bionic Six ......... Shazam and the Super Power Hour ......Spider-Man and the Spider Friends..... Dungon and Dragons ...... or maby somthing like Thundar the Barbarian.
I'd just started collecting the new street fighter comic .....it's an excellent book (art and dialog) and now I hear that it's being made into a movie (based on the comic). and did anybody see the new astro boy cartoon ? in my opinion it's really good and it stays close to the original.
who reads the ultimate line of comics by marvel ? By far the best comics on the market out right now. especically Ultimate Spider Man . if somthing's better out there let me know .
I remember Auto-man and Cursor...that was the coolest show...I think the car that Cursor turned into was a D'Lorean right?...in any case I am glad somebody else remembers it besides me...lol..people at work were laughin at me cause no one else remembers....it was the same for the Bionic Six....the episodes with the Band-droids were the coolest.....
I agree with you Mad . But the episode I loved best were when sports 1 received a New York Yankees tryout. By the way do anybody remembers the cartoons called Galaxy Rangers ,and also the cartoon called the Orrbots ?

The Galaxy Rangers was real tight...esp Shane...I can't say that I remember the ORbots though.....
coshawn jenkins said this in post #57 : I just finished looking at Transformers the movie , possibaly the best animated movie ever . and now I am looking at G.I. Joe the movie.
Cobra lalalalaaaaaaaaaaaa !
Ok...I liked everything about that movie except teh Cobra-La battle cry!....
My friends and I saw Transformers the movie on the big screen when it came out originally....it was and is, just an awesome piece or work...hated when Big Bot aka Optimus died though....
I have, and the art is on point . the new spin on his powers is very interesting and well thought out .
I have 2 new books on my radar 1. the Outsiders , 2. Superman/Batman those books are (in my humble opinion) some of the best books to come out in some time .
By the way is anyone else disappointed with the Avengers/JLA crossover . don't get me wrong the art is spectacular (George Perez) but the story does not live up to the expatiations.
I haven't read the crossover, or heard much about Aquaman's new book and the new spin on his powers. Please ellaborate when you get the chance.
To be honest, I was really despising the artwork that was going on at DC years back, and haven't given them a chance since then. It was only yesterday when I saw a new Superman comic (with him in his new suit... I like it...), and took a moment to browse through it. The artwork has definitely come a long way. I think I'm ready to finally buy my second Superman issue...
