| BRITNEY'S STILL AN AMERICAN DREAM
TROUBLED pop princess Britney Spears put her worries behind her with a fiery performance at the American Music Awards.The star, who broke down in tears on television last week, wowed the crowd as she opened the awards show with her new single, Me Against the Music. But there was no repeat of that smooch with Madonna at MTV's Video awards earlier this year.
Britney looked stunning as she was lowered on to stage in a sexy Barbarella-style purple corset, hot pants and thigh-high boots at the Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. Soul legend Luther Vandross was honoured with two gongs for best male R&B performer and favourite soul-R&B album.
The star, who is still recovering from a stroke, was too ill to attend, but his mum, Mary, accepted hisawards on his behalf. Tough-guy rapper 50 Cent also picked up two awards for best male rap artist and best rap-hip-hop album for Get Rich or Die Tryin.
He was one of several winners who snubbed the show.
Jennifer Lopez pulled out at the last minute, but still picked up favourite pop female artist, beating Beyonc Knowles. Justin Timberlake couldn't make the ceremony either, but accepted his trophy for best pop album via satellite from Germany where he is on tour. Aaliyah was honoured as best female R&B artist, her third American Music Award since she died in a plane crash in 2001. Pamela Anderson was there and Rod Stewart performed along with Pink, Ashanti, Sheryl Crowe and Sean Paul.
