The Choices you make define who you really are (...and how you should be judged)
As JKR described in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, a major theme of Book 2 is to establish the effect of choices and actions taken by Harry and the other characters. No matter who they are or what kind of background they came from, each character is faced with choices that define who they are and what they will become. Those choices will also impact the lives of all the characters and are at the heart of this mystery. The Sorting Hat gave Harry a choice: Slytherin and power, or Gryffindor and morality.
