A ? for the Bush/America bashers... |
| Posted by: Charles | | One of the primary fallacies of formal logic is when, instead of taking issue with the points of an argument, you attack the "man" who makes the argument. Argumentum ad hominum.
America bashers please respond and answer yes or no to follwing questions:
1. Did Saddam comply with the cease fire resolution 687?
2. Did Saddam comply with resolution 1441? Remember? The ultimatum that offered Saddam a "final" opportunity to immediately, unconditionally, and completely comply or face the consequences?
3. Was 1441 passed unanimously?
4. Did 1441 directly incorporate and invoke the "war clause" from resolution 678 that authorized all member states to use any means necessary to enforce the UN resolutions?
I look forward to your responses! | | Reply To this Message

I'm from North Central North Dakota in the great U.S.A! There's no other place I'd rather be.
I guess those America/Bush bashers have a right to vent their anger but if it was their country that was attacked in some way, they'd probably be begging for our help. I've been watching CNN and seen that we've been called murderers, killers, etc. But did they call Saddam the same thing? It seemed it was ok that Saddam killed his people, but we're not allowed to put a stop to it. The guy who's killed tens of thousands of innocent people? It's because we're involved in this, the most powerful country in the world, we're the evil one. How much help has the U.S. given to these countries now condemning us, in the past? That region over there has been blowing each other way for centuries, it's funny they aren't used to this sort of thing. In Egypt, what if some nut flew a plane into their beloved Spinx or a pyramid? How about the Eiffel Tower in Paris? Wouldn't they get mad?
To those countries against this thing, if you don't want to help us then get out of the way! You can't tell me Iraqis aren't happy to see us. I seen on CNN some of our troops were practically getting hugged and kissed by Iraqi soldiers/citizens just happy to see us. Then an Iraqi tore down a poster of Saddam and took his shoe and beat Saddam's face with it. These Iraqi citizens for the first time in ages will have a chance to not have to live in fear so much. Saddam did nothing to help his citizens, just help himself.
Plus, we've pledged medicines and food and tons of aid to help Iraq rebuild and hopefully be a peaceful country with opportunity for all. Iraqi citizens have been in prison with this dictator long enough.
So you America/Bush bashers, go ahead and bash us, WHO CARES! Hate us, WHO CARES! When you are struck with a tragedy that's beyond something that you can cope with, who ya gonna call? What's the number to the White House?
I didn't vote for Bush in the last election, but I support him in this move. The Iraqis will get a new lease on life. Also, I do believe we have over 40 countries offering some sort of support, WE ARE NOT ALIENATED!!!!
Thanks Charles, for starting this thread, I needed to vent!

| Posted by: John Kim | | In response to Charles: I can't actually find the text of Resolution 687, so I can't directly answer your question at this time. (If you have a link for it, I'd be interested to read it.)
In any case, however, I consider it pretty stupid to cite in a lawyer-like manner a vague clause in a 12-year-old document (i.e. what you call the "war" clause of 687) and say that that is all the justification one needs. Combing over the exact text of the resolution should not be the point. If we in the U.S. want to be a moral leader in the world -- which I think we should be -- we need to cooperate with our allies and work in cooperation with them instead of claiming that we don't need their permission based on a point of phrasing. | | Reply To this Message

Exact text of U.N. resolutions should not be the point? Why not? You see.. the process of combing over that exact text is not a piddly semantic debate - it's an internationally agreed to proposal that we are acting upon with the best intention behind it. Said agreement also negates the false arguments that Bush is a "war criminal" and that the U.S. is operating illegally.

Frankly, there simply is no such thing as "international law" in the same sense of internal civil law. Legal agreements between nations are frequently violated and constantly renegotiated. The U.N. is a mass of disagreements, and if you comb through its documents you are sure to find any number of contradictions.
So, yes, I agree that labelling Bush as a "war criminal" is a false argument. But conversely, I don't think that Bush or his supporters can hold up any piece of paper and claim that gives us the right to go to war. War has to be justified on the actual present conditions and options, not on a bit of phrasing from a 12-year-old resolution.

thanks for asking this charles, along with other questions wisely chosen to mark your point of you and omiting the context of the questions.
however the facts your questions are a trap, i will answer to this one. sorry for the stupidity of the answer, i m just matching the questions.
"Did Saddam comply with resolution, 1441". I m not a UN lawyer, i guess i need a resolution telling me he did not comply to legitimate any action as a consequence of 1441, where it the resolution stating he is not complying ? my guess it s the one USA refused to present to UN.

Sorry I thought you would have realised the spelling alterations in my initial post were purposeful. They were there to represent the person who may have asked those questions, in slang lingo.
In response to your reply that Saudi's have oil, in my post you should note I was referring to Saudi, Algerian and Yemeni terrorists, they are in possession of no oil. I won't apply a thumbs down to you at the end of my post, as it is ridiculous to use such symbolism.

| Posted by: HiPriestess | | As an American who did NOT vote for Bush, I want to make one thing perfectly clear, there are many of who stand by our President because we stand by our country. We know that one man alone does not make all the decisions in this country, and although we may not agree with everything our government lays before us, you will never encounter a more patriotic people. We can and have spoken out against the war on Iraq. Half of this country is against, half is for this war. We're almost split down the middle. However, even those against this war support our fighting men and women, and will do whatever is neccessary now that we are at war to let those brave patriots know that we are behind them. Bush got elected by a narrow margin, and after this, chances are he won't be elected again. So be it. I suspect the world knows that America stands by its own, and will always do so. Knowing the people of this country, many a tear was shed over the American soldiers lost today. Tears were also shed for the Iraqi sons and fathers who will never return home, choosing to bravely fight for a government they believed in. I dopn't remember Desert Storm, but I do remember my mom saying when Bush won the election that he would "finish his daddy's job." No doubt. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Dreamzwalker | | Yeah, it is ridiculous - but it makes me feel like "Siskel and Ebert"
Sorry HiPriestess - but if they support our men...strange way of doing it.
When our men see protests - even though it is Bush mentioned, they are the ones that feel the pain more.
They feel it is against them as they are the ones standing up for our country. Bush may tell them were to go - but protesting against Bush's actions impacts our loved ones as much as the war impacts them. That's how the people I know feel. They are over there right now. | | Reply To this Message
