Weigh in guys, what does everyone think about Britney Spears? IMO I can't stand her. I think she's got limited talent and sells herself on her appearance and sex appeal. She wants to move into a more mature image and no longer wants to be idolized by kids. It irritates me that she based her career off of the Mickey Mouse Show, started with a bubble gum image, had a huge following of kids and teens, and then suddenly BANG! She's SUPERSLUT on wheels. My sister and I don't allow my nieces (who once LOVED Britney) to listen to her or watch her videos, because we think 9 & 11 years old is too young for them to be exploring their sexual promiscuity. She wants to evolve as an artist, fine. But she's not an artist. There is nothing in her music that is evolving other than the sexual content, and her metamorphosis seems to be primarily in the fact that she's now a ho....

I agree. She knows there are a lot of kids who idolize her I think it would be appropriate for her to recognize that and tone down the sexual image a little bit. I had heard about her dropping diet pills at an airport or something and that pissed me off!! She's giving the impression that diet pills are okay, especially when you don't need them! Grr, I think she sux.

I'm in agreeance with both of you! The message that she gives off is NOT a positive one. She's put forth a "Im a slut" personality. She says "with her videos" that it's okay to dress with limited clothes, do sexual things (and that doesn't mean intercourse) I just mean, sexual things. Teen agers and younger do NOT need to be learning this kind of stuff. So Brittany, go and evolve... but you're not sending across a message that makes me proud.

I've never liked Britney's image. I have enjoyed only maybe one of her songs (the first one...). Now that her image has taken hold, I don't enjoy her music and I'm not sure that I ever will.

Someone help me out: Does Britney write or co-produce any of her songs? I want to give her some kind of credit other than just physical. She isn't facially stunning or anything. She just looks good facially with the right makeup artist. Other than that, she's plain jane facially. Her body isn't wowing me either. I think she's either got short legs, or a long-long torso. And for goodness sakes, are we the only ones who have noticed that she isn't very strong vocally either? She can't sing well, or at least, she doesn't possess a very good singing VOICE. I don't like her singing style at all.

I may sound like I'm nit-picking, and maybe I am. But for the LIFE of me, I can't understand why she was so popular... Was it from the get-go, with the school-girl outfit that got the pervs going? Cuz, even then, she couldn't sing and the track is loaded with accompaniment to mask her voice.

Since the comparisons are ALWAYS going to be there between her and Christina, due to the Mickey Mouse Club, and maybe even Justin Timberlake, I'm going to go there. Christina is an infinitely better singer and vocalist than Britney. Out of the 4 Mickey Mouse Clubbers to go big (Britney, Christina, Justin Timberlake and J.C. Chasez from N'Sync), Britney is the WORST vocalist, and possibly the worst artist out of all of them. But up until recently, she was (and HAD) the biggest money maker (I think JT has eclipsed her in earnings now, but I'm not sure...).

I guess it is due to her sexiness (which I fail to recognize...). I think someone should come along who is both as sexy as Britney (in the eyes of the public, anyway... Not me...), and can sing as well as Christina.

And, if I may say so, J.C. Chasez deserves more attention than he has been getting lately. He's just as talented a singer as Justin... I would say just as creative too....

Well, The Ken doll does prove "29.99 is a great price for teens to learn(birds & the bees) at a youbng age (5?-12) i mean, i heard the show Micky mouse club was canceled due to the Kids sex immage off screen towards others, & some part of ratings. Well, plastic melts britney. Real last.

Everyone picks on Britney and I think it is really unfair. Heaps of girls, young and old, in the music and movie industries use their bodies to sell themselves. Christina and Britney are only the tip of the iceberg.

Look at Jewel, she sang beautiful music and let her voice do the work for her, but now she has sexed-up her image and is doing well (hmmm? I dunno).

I don't think it is neccessarily good for these people to be so sexually explicit at times, but anything within bounds is okay to me. I just think everyone should stop picking on Britney, she is not the only one being sexy.

You're right Schmigg, a lot of celebrities use their image to sell albums because they lack mostly in other places. Jewell had fine sales before so I don't know what's with the overhaul of her image. But true artists can make music without using their image as a crutch to increase sales volume.
Britney's remade image (according to Dateline NBC) is due to the fact that she's marketing to an older audience because her sales are declining. Her sales are declining because her original fanbase can no longer relate to her "sexed up" music and image. By original fanbase I mean kids. There are young singers out there that have not compromised their appeal to both young and adult audiences by wearing studded bras on stage and dancing provocatively. (Mandy Moore comes to mind)
But what Britney has done is shunned the very audience that got her to where she is today. She doesn't want to be a role model for kids anymore and she's doing a good job of making sure that parents won't let their kids listen to her music or watch her videos. But what about her fans that adored her, bought her cds and posters and every piece of marketable merchandise because they idolized her? Now they're left wondering "why won't mom & dad let me listen to her anymore?". So I won't stop picking on poor Britney, she's earned the reputation of being a sellout. Sorry Schmig, but I have to agree 100% with sierra on this one.

And I'm with you, chelktty. She did sell out. Don't like her, and I don't have to.

i don't know why anybody is suprised that a popstar sold out... that's the very definition of pop, do everything that the board and the A&R's tell you will make an extra dollar. Adults and older teens have more money than children, she's gonna try to tap that audience with the only thing she has that appeals to them... GOD KNOWS IT ISN"T HER SINGING... I don't dislike her anymore than i did when she first came out... same trash, newer and improved package... all these pop stars that you guys have blown up are never going away, they all want to turn into madonna and just linger around like a cancer for 30 or so years. It's funny, all of the pop fans are now pretending to like rap; specifically Dr. Dre's two pokemon Eminem and 50 cent, so they can look hardcore. Maybe Britney will start wearing do-rags and walking around with unloaded guns just like eminem!

Oh, god help us if Brittney turns in to a do-rag wearing, gun toting star.

Look at Christina A, she is trying to make her image a bit more "gansta" to cash in on this. Britney will probably follow her lead.

where is the word "all" in my post? i'm just saying the truth. from elvis, to clapton, the beatles, stones, britney and eminem and everywhere between and before... It's how music has worked in america. I mean... there are some exceptions... like bagpipe music. But basically Black ppl invent a music style, for years most white people will act like they don't like it, and a few will enjoy it proudly. Then it somebody white will come along, water it down, and make it ok for white people to like it, and then they jump on the wagon in massive droves. Black people then make up something new and the cycle repeats itself. It's nothing to be ashamed of, it's just how it works.

Well, I'm not one of those people. I don't follow anything that is "hip" or "in the now." I'm just a person that likes what I like, not caring if it's the in thing, the latest fashion, etc...

I just hate that there seems to be a black/white issue. I mean, there doesn't have to be. Music doesn't "belong" to anyone. It is for all to share, in my opinion.

i think music is god's gift and it's for sharing, but i think it's a dirty, bold faced lie that elvis is "the king" sinatra is "the voice" and astaire is "the best dancer" and that 90% of the people who say eminem is the best rapper of all time can't name 25 other rappers they compare him to... i think skin does matter at some and at point it's not copying... it's wearing my clothes and saying they're yours.

I guess, in some people's eyes, skin does matter. I just meant, that for me, it doesn't make a difference what the skin color is. And, just for the record, I don't think that Elvis was the king. I don't think that Sinatra was the voice, and I don't think that Astaire is the best dancer. I have different people that fit that role in my eyes. And you're right... a lot of people do say that about Eminem, but not everyone feels that way, elk.

I, personally, don't like rap. There are some songs that I like... but it's not my top favorite. I'm just an 80's gal when it comes to music choices. There are all different kinds of music that appeal to me, in all genre's. It just depends on the beat and tone of the music, my 'emotions' at that moment, and what the lyrics are. I don't like abusive words. I don't like 'slang' talk... but, that's me. Doesn't mean that it's wrong.

Anyway... are we ever off the topic. Oh well...

I don't remember anywhere in this thread where white musicians were called the owners of a genre, I took offense to your remarks because I assumed you had a chip on your shoulder and were making a generalized statement about white artists. I didn't care for the new Britney video, and I agree with Schmi, Madonna should consider acting her age. She's a mother in her 40's now, it just looks wrong and creepy when she does her stripper dances on stage. It's as if I'm watching my mom dance like that...an image NONE of us needs to see!

Wow... I'm in my 30's, and I have to say, I grew up with Madonna... watching her video's, listening to her music, etc... She is still an EXTREMELY sexy woman. I'm not much for the whole Britney/Madonna thing, but it doesn't bother me. Just because you're older, or you have children, does not mean that you can't be sexy anymore. Look at Cher? She's incredible. Also, just because you're older or a mother doesn't mean that you have to become all straight laced. I would hate to see that happen to Madonna. That is WHO she is.

I guess everyone has something that they always do... Maybe it's akin to a nervous twitch... When I sing, my eyes are closed 90% of the time (on stage, I'm referring to... Not while driving or something...). But everyone else that I've mentioned actually has talent (I don't yet have an opinion on 50 Cent, so I omit him from my present statement...) in what they do.

I can't reconcile Britney's worldwide success with her actual singing or dancing abilities... And personally, her appearance does very little to entice me. Her songs stink, in my opinion, so for me it's really hard to grasp her staying power up to this point...
