Was Billy your Idol or did a Flock of Seagulls make you smile? Did you want your MTV? Or were you too young and were you playing with your G.I. Joe and My Little Pony. Perhaps you sported a mullet for your senior prom. What did you love or hate about that place in time known as The 80's.

Oh man, was I ever a teen of the 80's. I loved it. My favorite thing in the 80's... Def Leppard. I'm STILL a huge fan of the band!!!!

Music was the best thing about the 80's, and it still is today. I can't think of another era of music that I would rather listen to. There was just something about it.

What did I hate about the 80's? Hmm... that will take some thinking.

I agree with KJ, the best thing about the eighties was the music. I had my 20th high school reunion just recently, and the music they played was great...Every song was awesome!!

Bad things about the eighties....easy one...BIG HAIR! Yuck! Why was it necessary for everyone to have hair that big? Remember the movie working girl? Remember the hair Joan Cusack wore? (she played Melanie Griffith's best friend in the movie) THAT is the hair Im talking about! LOL!! Gross!

I would put hot rollers in my hair every morning to have hair like that.....when I think about it...I cringe! LOL!!

I love guys in make up... NOT as a cross dresser, but, the rock bands, guys with big hair. I just always thought that it was sexy. Hmmmm, and I WONDER why I am like I am now.

I loved shows like... Growing Pains and The Cosby Show.
I loved bands like... well, you already know that I LOVE Def Leppard. There was Duran Duran, Echo and the Bunnymen, Oingo Boingo. Rock bands like Motley Crew, Quiet Riot, Ratt, etc... Pat Benatar, Journey, Foreigner, and the list can go on and on and on.
I loved movies like... The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, 16 Candles, Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, Ferris Bullers Day Off.

How about torn jeans? Wasn't that cool? Or, parachute pants? (okay, so that didn't last long) Wearing black leather wrist straps with dull or sharp spikes?

Rubiks Cube? Those were sooooo easy.

Did you ever play the game, Paperboy? I was obsessed with that game.

Do you remember when you went to the video store, and the only choice that you truly had to make was VHS or Beta? Wow... look how far we've come. Thank god... because DVD's are a GREAT invention.

Parachute pants I could have done without, but torn jeans were SO cool. What about them having to be so tight you would have to lay on your bed to zip them! LOL! Ahhhh...those were the days!

Yeah, it was sure a lot of fun!!! And the media played right along with it. There would always be something out there for them to stip up, and we would all rush out and buy the record.

One of my favorite things to do in the 80's... well, I bought every single magazing that had Def Leppard in it and I made photo albums. I must have had at least a dozen, with hundreds of pages in each, filled about the guys. And, I had Def Leppard pictures all over my walls. My parent's hated that. From the ceiling to the floor. There was NO paint showing. And my door, and closet doors were also covered. My ceiling had tapestries pinned up there. I was a huge fan.

Good: Boom boxes! Those were so cool. I had a big one that took 12 d size batteries. I would plant that sucker on my chest and listen to the radio, and take a nap.
The thump of the bass to all those 80's tunes would change the rythim of your heartbeat.
I would listen to the Rick Deeze (spelling?) weekly top 40 and they would all be good.
I was so naive, I thought that good music would last forever.

You still hear some good music today, but it seemed like it was all good back then. Maybe being a teenager had something to do with it. I think the teens from the 50's and 60's say the same thing.

Bad: the cold war. I liked Reagan a lot, he was like John Wayne kind of, but with the Ruskies hacked off all the time, the nation spent a lot more time thinking about nuclear war, etc. back then.

Ahhh, The 80's. How I loved the music. I was into Billy Idol-had my wall covered with his pictures. I also loved Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Oingo Boingo, Def Leopard. I also LOVED my Izod shirts. I had so many of them, and the blazer, the penny loafers.

I hated parachute pants. They were way too tight and why teenage boys liked them, well I was shocked. Actually liked them at the time, hate em now. I also hated the hair bands. Guys with long hair and makeup. Yuck. They looked like girls.

Does anyone else have a ton of 80's compilation CD's?

I love the eighties big hair. It was so cool. Other things I love about the eighties are:

Big Shoulder Pads
Leg Warmers
The Michael Jackson look

God, come on guys admit it, you wore a red leather jacket everywhere when Michael was cool, maybe you even wore one white glove? HILARIOUS.

Ummmmmmmmmm, nope! I wasn't a Michael Jackson follower, ever. Couldn't stand him, the way he dressed, looked, or his music.

I wore jeans, leather jackets, had really long hair, etc... I was a rocker chick through and through. Wish that I still had the picture. My mom took it of me, when I was like 16 years old. She was behind me and I was turning around to look at her. I had on skin tight jeans, a really tight tshirt, punked out hair, etc...

Yeah Kris, that did not surprise me.

Sorry Schmiggens, but I totally hated Michael Jackson. I did not know anyone at my school who liked him. But I am sure there are artists that I liked that you hated. O.K. I will admit it, I liked Madonna.

I loved going to the dollar movie and also to the drive in. We would all go out and TP a house, usually the same one, like once a week.

Loved the dollar movie theatre in Clairemont. We went there on Tuesday nights, and had a blast.

I like Madonna. She was hot then... so she had my attention. I don't think that she could sing at the time, but she was fun to look at now and then.

What about Atari? and the old games where you sat down at the little desk to play? (I forget what they were called?) Pinball? God you just have to love the eighties.

The only thing about Michael Jackson I liked in the eighties was his Thriller song. Remember waiting for that on MTV? We couldnt wait for that video to come on.

I HATED big hair!

BUT.....I was a HUGE David Lee Roth Fan (Van Halen Rocks!!) I had David Lee Roth pictures all over my room.

OMG....Adam Ant....good one KJ!! I love that song "strip"

I hated those shoulder pads...well I should rephrase..I liked them then...now I laugh at em.

What was it that in the eighties everything had to be big? Our hair...our shoulders?

Okay...fuscia..speaking of preppy...what about monogrammed sweaters, and there was a purse that got really popular...it was from the Limited, and you could get your monogram on it. I wish i still had it.

I remember buying 45 LP's...remember those little records with one song on each side? I still have quite a few of those.....to mention.I have one from the Gogo's, Julian Lennon, and Rick Springfield.... "Jessie's Girl"

Remember Quarterflash? I still have a 45 LP from them also.

Tp'ing peoples houses in the eighties must have been a universal (or at least a statewide) thing to do in the eighties....we also spend many weekend nights doing that.

A little DLR for everyone...........

x 10

(didn't want to create 80 smiley faces)

okay, first off. let's get the easy stuff out of the way. what i didn't like about the 80's decade: it only lasted 10 years!
that and "new kids on the block".

okay, now to the nitty gritty. best stuff about the 80's: muzak, muzak, muzak! i love 80's music. 80's bands taught us many things.

i learned that "video killed the radio star" but i didn't care! it was for a good cause. i learned more than i ever wanted to know about a girl named Jenny with a telephone number that went a little something like this: eight six seven five three oh nigh-ee-ine i learned about "tainted love"(soft cell) and how to "harden my heart"(quarterflash) with a "poison arrow"(abc) before i fell prey to the "heat of the moment"(asia). kool & the gang taught me about "celebration". "love is a battlefield"(pat benatar) that "cuts like a knife"(bryan adams) and "suddenly last summer"(the motels) i learned how to "relax"(frankie goes to hollywood) in "a big country"(big country) with my "sweet dreams"(the eurythmics). "she drives me crazy"(fine young cannibals) because "everybody wants to rule the world"(tears for fears) with their "sledgehammer"(peter gabriel) trying to show people how to "walk this way"(run-d.m.c.). i becames "addicted to love"(robert palmer) while "luka"(suzanne vega) was "looking for a new love"(jody watley). "oh yeah"(yello) i almost forgot about the "lady in red"(chris deburgh). am i done? "oh yeah"(yello) i'm done.
NOT! "here i go again"(whitesnake) because it's "my prerogative"(bobby brown) so "everybody have fun tonight"(wang chung) and try to find that "higher love"(steve winwood). but stay away from "jessie's girl"(rick springfield) because she's a "maneater"(hall & oates). some would go so far to call her a "superfreak"(rick james). i prefer to think of her as a "goody two shoes"(adam ant) with her little "stray cat strut"(stray cats). "mr. telephone man"(new edition) tried to teach me "the safety dance"(men without hats) because "somebody's watching me"(rockwell) but "i ran"(a flock of seagulls). i learned to only go out to eat if i was "hungry like the wolf"(duran duran) and not to eat runny sour cream unless you "whip it"(devo). i learned how to "drive"(the cars) and give my "rebel yell"(billy idol) to anyone that cut us off because "we're not gonna take it"(twisted sister) even if we do get into "jeopardy"(greg kihn). i learned how to be "true"(spandau ballet) to my "caribbean queen"(billy ocean). and remember "no one is to blame"(howard jones) if "you belong to the city"(glenn frey) and work the "nightshift"(commodores). "oh sheila"(ready for the world) if you read this, there's "something about you"(level 42) that reminds me of the "miami vice theme"(jan hammer). "word up"(cameo). don't forget that "heaven is a place on earth"(belinda carlisle) unless you "walk like an eqyptian"(bangles). so keep your heads up and keep "walking on sunshine"(katrina & the waves). i'm off to "pump up the jam"(technotrinic) because it looks a little flat. though i'm not sure if it is jam or jelly. i'm leaving now but you'll miss me because you "don't know what you've got (till it's gone)"(cinderella).

LONG LIVE MENUDO!

oh, and (as evident in my sig) i also love the movie TRON

Very Impressive Lark.

In the early 80s by then I had about 1300 albums...and went out and bought the latest in tech..a Marantz CD player. ( i still only buy marantz audio )The only "Pop" cd you could buy was Stevie Nicks "Belladonna". All the rest were "classical" music.
Disco was being replaced by "Slam dancing" Yuk!
My platform dance shoes (20 pairs) was out of style. The gold fish even died in the one pair.
Turquois jewelry was out.
IBM came out with the "PC" with dos 1.1. 8086 processor and the 8087 math coprocessor. 2 floppies and 128k ram, CGA monitor. Modems was a Cradle you put the handset of the phone in. The games was 'Text" based..No graphics. This machine cost 2600$ at the time.
The best graphics computer of the 80s was an Amiga. I had one. It even came with Stereo sound.
My first copy of 'windows'...I threw it away and stuck with Dos.
Battle star galactica was canceled. Bummer!
1985...Stereo TV. Again another Marantz..
MTV...I was hooked!
Robert palmers "Addicted to love" very hot "!
Married with children
Crime story
Miami vice
In living colors
Star trek..Next generation.

What I hated the most was..The Aids outbreak.

I was so sad when Robert Palmer died. I loved his music.

Larke, I started this thread with you in mind. I LOVED the music. Especially the Police. I listed to a greatest hists of the Police at least once a week. Heck, my little kids sing the songs! So reassuring to know that I am not the only one who was and still is so crazy about 80's music.

Oh, Grant, Damon stole his sister's Hello Kitty. Now he sleeps with her. Very strange, but he is only four.

My son was 2 and not much of a talker. Our grocery store is frequented by senior citizens. So we are going out to the car, I am 9 months pregnant, all these old ladies are saying how cute he is, then it begins. In a sweet little voice that sounds like Elmer Fudd on helium "ROXANNE, you don't have to put on the red light. Those days are over you don't have to sell your body to the night..." Boy, did I get some dirty looks. He just loves the Police.

oh did someone mention the police? go to this page for a nice midi treat.

i found this page back in july when some of us were up too late in the matrix forum: flashback

My kids love the Police. There were just so many groups and songs that I loved. It was a big deal when a new video was released.

Break dancing. I never liked it, but I dated a guy who was into it.

We would go out every Friday night after the football game and go for pizza. All the money we put the the jukebox to hear songs like Erotic City and stuff by Prince.

Have you watched the I love the 80's series on VH1? I love this thread because my husband never liked pop music. He was more into punk, ska, and heavy metal.

fuscia: i watch those if i happen to be channel surfing. another good thing about not being in the 80's is the technology. in the 80's i didn't have a channel on my TV that would stream songs two decades old. or satellite radio in my car with a 60's channel. or internet radio 80's channel. so even though the 80's are gone the technology allows me to get my fill of my addiction to 80's songs anytime and anyplace i want and as much as i want. am i too over the top? maybe there should be an 80's addicts help group in here.

hello, i'm larke2000 and i have a problem. what am i saying? i don't have a problem. all of you have a problem, i'm just doing research. yeah, that's the ticket... research.

That "nightshift" song from the Commodores was an awesome tune and I had forgotten all about it.

I liked the Police so much, I sat through Dune just to see if Sting could act. I thought he did o.k., the rest of the movie was

I grew up in Florida, before I moved to Tulsa, and Miami Vice was the rage down there. In high school, in the 95 degree weather, the dudes would wear the white jackets and the pink puffy pants and the loafers with no socks. It looked cool (back then at least), but man, that stuff was hot.

Someone mentioned Men at Work *cough*fuscia*cough* so I had to sorry
Down Under - Men At Work
Traveling in a fried-out combie,
On a hippy trail, head full of zombie,
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous,
She took me in and gave me breakfast, and she said...

"Do you come from a land down-under?
Where women glow and men plunder,
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder,
You better run, you better take cover."

Buying bread from a man in Brussels,
He was six-foot-four and full of muscles,
I said "Do you speak my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich,
And he said...

"I come from a land down-under,
Where beer does flow and men chunder,
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder,
You better run, you better take cover."

Lying in a den in Bombay,
with a slack jaw and not much to say,
said to the man "Are you trying to tempt me?"
Because I come from the land of plenty?
And he said...

"Oh!!! Do you come from a land down-under?"
Where women glow and men plunder,
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder,
You better run, you better take cover."

Mr. Smith (crime boss) was the guy who later became the commodant in the 'police academmy" movies. "Jeff" weber later was "Macguyver" and "Stargate SG1" series. Laura, in real life was married to " Commander ryker" of star trek Next gen.

Anyone else remember going to the roller rink and having all night skate parties?

Member's Only Jackets Everyone had those too!

One Hit Wonders- don't forget "Too Shy" by Kajagoo goo(spelled wrong of course) and "Come on Ilene" by Dexies Midnight Runners

My dad got my brother and me two arcade video games. We came home from school, and there in our family room were Mrs. Pacman and Centipeid. Oh man, we would stay up all night playing those games!!! Our own personal arcade!

Did'nt have a members only jacket, but I did have a pair of those zipper pants. They had like 9 or ten pockets, some on the legs, and they all had zippers.

I thought I was so cool. But hey, everyone else was wearing this stuff, we were cool at the time.

I miss those big giant record albums. I wish I would have saved them and my record player. Doe!!!!!!!!!

Some I had:
Van Halens 1984

The cars album with Drive on it.

Bruce Springstien Born in the Usa

Wierd Al Yankovic (hate to admit that one)

M. Jackson Thriller

I was in goodwill a couple of years ago and they had the same record player/stereo that I owned as a teenager. (same design, not the exact same one) It was only 25 bucks. I went to get some money, and when I came back it was gone. It was funny how nostalgic it made me feel.

my wife (before we married) moved out of her parents house down to charleston for a few years. a few weeks before we were going through her closet and found her old atari. i hooked it up and she skilled me in the art of underwater combat with "sea quest". i was more of a space invaders pacman guy. i always have to have two quarters on me at all times just in case i run across a Ms. Pac-Man arcade system. they used to be 25 cents. now they're half a dollar!

whidden: love "born in the USA" and weird al. wow. i didn't realize that i've been buying weird al albums for more than 15 years! :ee:

One day I was listening to "The rye or the kaiser?", set to the tune of The eye of the tiger and got made fun of for owning the record.

It's not like it scarred me mentally or anything, but since then, I have kept the fact that I am a Wierd Al Yanovic fan secret knowledge.
Until now!!!!

On Ms. Pac Man, I would get up to the 9th level I think it was, and it had red dots. I would have all my Ms. Pac Mans left, with no deaths.
Still on level 9 or 10, I would get totally wiped out.
I wonder how many levels that game had?

I also loved Galaga. They had one down at the grocery store. I would go down there and play for hours. Galaga was a souped up space invaders with classical midi music.

There used to be a Family Fun Center in La Mesa. Kids and teens would go there for this huge arcade. I loved Centipede and Asteroids.

What I hated was the Flash-dance look. Never wore the torn sweatshirts. I did love it when mini skirts came in fashion.

Did anyone else love English Beat? I am so glad that my husband has it on vinyl.

I been watching the 80's series on Vh1 and it brings back a lot of good memories.
The only thing about that show is they got some rude crude humor.
I got a very high threshold for that rude humor, but I feel kind of dirty after watching cause they say some vile wicked things.

More 80's stuff that comes to mind:

The yugo. That piece of junk Yugoslavia car that was everywhere for about 4 months and then they all broke down at the same time. I worked at a gas station and they would come in and fill up, and then not start.

Frankie goes to hollywood. They got banned in Fort Myers (on the radio station) cause of the Relax dont do it song.

Aliens came out. That was my favorite movie until The Matrix knocked it off it's throne. The movie still holds up when you watch it today. Some of the 80's special effects look better than the cgi stuff we see today.

It's wonderful life. That movie was on all over the place during december. Every year at that time, you would flip through the cable channels and see it on 3 or 4 channels at various stages of play.
I probably seen that movie more than any other. Sometime in the 90's, NBC bought the rights to it and now show it once a year on a saturday night. Those cold hearted orbs!

Space shuttle tragedy. This was our JFK assasination. The moment when everyone remembers where they were. Fort Myers was around 4 hours away from where the shuttle took off and if the day was clear, you could see the white smoke trail it left and just a tiny hint of the fire trail. We would see it every now and again waiting for the bus. On a clear night you could see a lot more of the fire trail. That was a bummer when it blew up.

Depeche mode, Spandau Ballet, Flock of Seagulls, Soft Cell, Orchestra Maneuvers in the Dark, Simple Minds......

Whidden, you are so right about the space shuttle being our J.F.K. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing. It was so sad.

Remember Swatch watches? I had 3.

Peter Gabriel. His videos were so different. I loved his music. "In Your Eyes" is my favorite. It brings back so many memories of when I started dating my husband.

"Blue Monday" was the "welcome to Tijuana" song. Here in San Diego, if you were under 21, you went to T.J. to drink and party. That song was played all the time. Only a teen could stand to drink that skunky Mexican beer and think it was fun.

Saturday Night Live! We watched it all the time to see what Eddie Murphy was going to do. That lead to all of the Beverly Hills Cops movies.

I had a Swatch watch and ----once again--------I wish I would have kept some of that stuff.

Someone needs to shake the teenagers out there today and tell them to store some of the trivial things. When you get old, you get nastalgic and you want to have it all back.

I guess it's time to get on E-bay and start forking out the bucks to get some retro-80's stuff.

So true!!!!

An indian guy at work told me a plane had hit the twin tower. It got real serious all of a sudden. We stopped working and listened to the radio.
For the rest of my life, when I think about 911, it will be listening to the radio with that guy.

9/11 was definitely bigger than the shuttle. The shuttle was the event that shattered our innocence. We never thought it could happen, and we saw it on television. It was the first disaster my generation went through.

9/11 I will always remember. I woke up very late, because my little baby had kept me up, to a confusing news cast. I called my best friend and she told me what happened. So, when I think of 9/11 I hear her voice.

I remember watching the shuttle blow up on tv... that was such a shattering thing. And we thought, "nothing could be worse." Boy, were we ever naive.

I woke up late too. I slept through the actual event. When I sat down right here where I am at this very moment, around 11 AM, I felt a different "tone" comming from the television. I was so tired... I looked over and saw "America under attack". I thought it was an over exaggeration or something because everything seemed so peaveful. The phones didn't ring, my family was all at work, everything seemed fine. But then they showed the plane fly into the trade center and my heart stopped. Then they showed people jumping OUT of the trade centers. I stood up and watched the news all day. I'll never forget.

Strange, but I believe that 9/11 made me more nostalgic for the 80's. We didn't even think about us being attacked by terrorists. We did worry about the U.S.S.R. and the bomb.

Did anyone else like Stings first solo album "Dream of the Blue Turtles"? So much of it was about the cold war.

I hope the Russians love their children too.....

How can I save my little boy
from Oppenhiemers deadly toy?

I remember those bits and peices of it. And I remember the tune, I liked that song a lot.

Man, you think about the 80's and you don't realize how much of it you forget. I'm only 35, not 95!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes! Loved that song and "Children's Crusade"
Young men, solders 1914
Marching through countries they'd never seen
Virgins with rifles a game of charades
All for a Children's' Crusade

Whidden, I though I was the only one forgetting things. It is so nice to know that I am not alone.

This weekend our Top 40 countdown show on TV "Video Hits" had it's 150000 episode birthday show thing and they went through all the songs that have been number one over the decades, they had so much stuff from the 80's it was so cool.

The fashion is awful, the dancing is hilarious (I have seen enough running-mans this weekend to last me a lifetime) but the music is classic. I could've kept watching them do 80's re-runs all day. It was fantastic.

Bit, Marvin Gaye's dad shot him over jealousy... they had a huge fight (on Marvin's birthday, by the way) and his father shot him... he was fanatically religious and hated Marvin for his sins, as well as resent the fact that despite these sins he was rich and famous.... so BANG BANG. Good-night Marvin.

Also, about swatches we have a heap of them... my wife loves to collect them, we still buy the valentines swatches every year, as well as the James Bond special editions, Final Fantasy ones, Lord Of The Rings and more (Yes, they are still making them)

Also, who remembers the TV Show SOAP? I think it was played in the late 70's, but early 80's as well... too funny for words

I really hated the "here's your brain... (puts two eggs in frying pan), here's your brain on drugs" commercials. No, my brain is not eggs. I've never done drugs, but even if I did, I know my brain wouldn't "fry". Some drugs don't "fry" your brain anymore than coffee, only difference is it temporarily impairs you to the point of crashing your vehical. The commercial should do this:

Here's your life. (Show a happy, coherent person enjoying a social gathering), here's your life if you get hooked on drugs: (Show that persons family and friends crying at his or her funeral).
