I have had my own web, with my own domain, for a few months. Recently, I have been unable to publish my web to update it. I get this error message:

The server could not complete your request. Contact your Internet Service Provider or web server administrator to make sure that the server has the FrontPage Server Extension installed. For more specific information, click Details.

In Details, I get:

403 Forbidden
Forbidden You don't have permission to access /_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc on this server.
Apache/1.3.27 Server at www.marlenesopinions.com Port 80

My web hoster seems to be MIA, now that my 30-days money back guarantee has expired. But, I had published regularly before, with no problems, so I do not know the cause of the problem now.

I am looking into a new web hoster, but would really like to get my website updated as quickly as possible.

Do any of you have any idea how to fix this problem? I should tell you, when I try to publish, this error message comes up BEFORE I am asked for my username and password.

Well.. first of all, FrontPage sucks... just FYI.

I will be happy to help you, but I need more info on who you are hosting with. I might suggest you try to access your site via FTP without going through FrontPage, but again, more info is needed here for me to be of much help.

In the mean time, you should check, out www.psyphire.com for some very inexpensive hosting packages with the great service you've come to expect from us at INReview. Shameless plug - yes I know. (For those who are completely lost by that statement, INReview was created and is run by Psyphire.)

So... some hosting info would be helpful, and hopefully I can help you update your site in no time at all!

Mike, yes I have looked into psyphire, sent them an e-mail inquiry listing what my needs are. Also looking at IPower.

I'm at work now, but I'll get that hosting information for you at home tonight. I did try publishing via ftp and got a different error message. I guess I could just copy all my updated pages to the ftp site, but that will be a real pain.

If not Front Page, what software program to publish with? I DON'T want to spend my time learning html, so I need a wysiwyg that converts for me. FrontPage came installed on my computer, and it is pretty user friendly, but I have had some problems with its limitations.

Thanks for your help. I'll get back to you tonight.

Okay, Mike, my current web host is OneWebHosting. I use MS FrontPage 2000, Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6.0, and DSL with SBC/Yahoo. I have just recently switched from AT&T broadband to DSL, but I have successfully published a few times since doing so.

Hey Mike, I know this is an old thread, but why don't you like Front Page? Better than hand coding the thing. Then you can FTP up the files. That's what I do for my website work.

FrontPage does horrible things to websites, Heck.

For simple layouts and people who are HTML-challenged (no offense intended towards you particularly), FrontPage does the trick. However, it will utterly RUIN anything that is imported in it. For example, should you create a really nice site outside of FrontPage, and then try to edit it with FP, your site gets screwed up. Also, the features are not all cross-compliant; the software is heavily biased towards Micro$oft technologies (go figure).

---------------------------------------------

The way it writes the HTML is also quite messed up - for example, if you I had written "computer game" and formatted "computer" to be bold and blue, the code generated would be something like:

quote:
<font color="blue" style="font-weight: bold">computer</font></b> game

That code is not optomized - it should simply be:
quote:
<font color="#0000FF"><b>computer</b></font> game

Furthermore, should you also apply the same format to the font of "game" in the above example, your code in FP would be:
quote:
<font color="blue" style="font-weight: bold">computer</font></b> ]<font color="blue" style="font-weight: bold">game</font></b>

Indeed, this code is obviously superfilous, and should really be the folowing:
quote:
<font color="#0000FF"><b>computer game</b></font>

---------------------------------------------

I deal mostly with complex layouts, realtime scripting, graphics, CSS, and dynamic content... so for me, FrontPage is an increadible trouble. I'd rather just hand-code a webpage.

I know HTML coding very well, but I use FrontPage more as a time saver. Hand coding just became a pain in the butt.

Currently I run 8 sites and check them through several browsers, they all come up the same. I use Java scripts like mad, Flash, and other tools. Admittedly, the sites aren't as complex as IR, however.

I'd like to PM you some links and see what you think...

Oh, and I don't use any of the FP features. I mean, like you said, they are mostly bias toward the Microsoft IE. Again, FP and DreamWeaver do the trick for solid designs that are basic when compared to something like IR.
