Bush Has Plan to Rebuild Iraq Within Year

The Bush administration's audacious plan to rebuild Iraq envisions a sweeping overhaul of Iraqi society within a year of a war's end, but leaves much of the work to private U.S. companies, Monday's Wall Street Journal reported.

The Bush plan, as detailed in more than 100 pages of confidential contract documents, would sideline United Nations development agencies and other multilateral organizations that have long directed reconstruction efforts in places such as Afghanistan and Kosovo. The plan also would leave big nongovernmental organizations largely in the lurch: With more than $1.5 billion in Iraq work being offered to private U.S. companies under the plan, just $50 million is so far earmarked for a small number of groups such as CARE and Save the Children.

Washington is under international pressure to broaden a postwar rebuilding effort, even as it continues to do battle with traditional allies over the merits of launching a war on Iraq. The administration recently has signaled it may seek down the road to give the U.N. and other countries a larger role. President Bush, after a one-hour summit in the Azores Islands, said yesterday that if it comes to war he plans to "quickly seek new Security Council resolutions to encourage broad participation in the process of helping the Iraqi people to build a free Iraq."

But U.N. officials said they still have no clear indication how the administration might involve the international body, especially if many of the large rebuilding tasks are already farmed out to U.S. companies directly answerable to Washington.

In other words,

"Dear Iraqi people
We are going to invade your country and drop thousands of bombs, killing thousands of your people. When the dust has settled your country will be in ruins and alot of your countrymen will be dead, maybe some of your family, and possibly even you. If that is the case can I offer my condolences in advance. But it's OK becasue we have arranged for American companies to come in and rebuild the country for you. How are we going to pay for it I hear you ask, again that has been taken care of, we will enable your oil fields to produce more oil and the revenue you get from that will be used to pay the American companies. While we are there we will install a US friendly regime and will be grateful for your co-operation with it. Under no circumstances can you split into your ethnic groups and try to split the country.
Best wishes, hope to see you in Bagdad,
Yours faithfully

George W. Bush

Search4Truth...are you truely that stupid ?

Afganistan's rebuilding is coming along very well. Remember this was a country that has been torn apart by war (because of the Russians I might add). Now Afganistan could possibly become a "regular" instead of a war ravaged wasteland.

The US is trying to get Afghistan back on its feet but we never promised to turn the country into a modern country stock with high rise building, an interstate system, running water and electricity for everyone overnight. That just isnt possible.

There isnt much to work with there either. The place is completely ruined, war-torn, filled with weapons, and factioned by warlords. Its not an easy task that will take place overnight but its not like we have pulled out of there either. We are still there helping the new government get on its feet, setting up a national army and local police forces, working to get the economy up and running and their agriculture growing again so that the country can being to function on its own in peace for the first time in 25 years.

Hell, we didn't even have to promise them anything. They are lucky we are doing anything at all. I mean, we could have just bombed the hell out of the place and left. And yes I understand that Afghnistan is a big place and that the US can't be all over the country all at once rebuilding everything. That is not what we mean by rebuilding the country and if you think that then you are sorely mistaken. It just means that we aren't going to leave them in chaos and I think that we have so far lived up to that promise.

If building an oil pipeline there is what has to happen in order to jump start their economy then so what? I suppose you think this is why we attacked them too right? You people place way to much importance on oil and read way to much into the power of big oil companies. Just because the people running the US have ties to big oil in the past does not mean they still work for big oil and not the US.

And don't blame that destruction of that country on the US either. Certainly we did some damage but its not as if we are responsible for it current state of chaos.

Our budget deficit will go through the roof, as we pay Bush and Cheney's friends billions of dollars to rebuild cities and infrastructure we didn't have to destroy in the 1st place! It's all a part of the divine plan of Savior Bush. Meanwhile, there goes our economy!
